November's Empowerment Session focused on the importance of setting goals and creating a positive mindset. Jan Risher, an award winning journalist and investigative reporter and former managing editor of The Times of Acadiana shared her personal story, knowledge and expertise with our membership. Jan is a former teacher of English as a Foreign Language at ULL and also taught in the Lafayette Parish School system. She now owns Shift Key, a content marketing and public relations firm and continues a freelance writing career. Jan helped our girls understand the value of goal setting and visualizing the life they aspire to live. By visualizing the future and creating vision boards, our girls were able to think beyond their current situations and allowed themselves to dream BIG! Girls were able to tell their stories by sharing their vision boards and speaking life into their aspirations. We learned that many of our girls dreamed of traveling to places like Paris, Bora Bora and other states. They want to become drum majors, doctors, lawyers and dancers. They hope to one day become homeowners. Members were inspired to focus on healthy living and many want to just try something new. Such a fun, powerful activity that opened their minds and provided an opportunity for them to see the possibilities. They can strive to obtain these goals.....starting now!
