In our October "Girl Talk" session, we talked about homelessness and the state of homelessness in Louisiana and right here in Acadiana. Acadiana homeless are often neglected during the winter months. They can often be found sleeping on park benches, resting under the overpass or simply roaming the streets. It can really get cold outside and socks are a much needed item for this population. A key component of our program is teaching our youth the importance of getting involved and making a difference in their community. A simple way to to address one of the needs for this targeted group, was to host a Sock It To Me" sock drive to support not only the homeless in our community, but our elderly and women and children who are in local shelters or other facilities. Our goal was to collect 500 pairs of new socks. We engaged local businesses and individuals. We posted the opportunity on social media and successfully exceeded our goal by collecting 987 pairs of socks. Socks will be provided to residents at Amelia Manor Nursing Home and River Oaks Retirement Manor. Our girls will sing Christmas carols and distribute new socks to the elderly. A generous donation of socks will be provided to hospitalized children at OLOL Women's and Children's Hospital. Seeds of Ashmay, which is a local nonprofit serving the homeless will also receive a donation, along with three (3) Lafayette parish schools. Special thanks to Acadiana Legal Service Corporation, Comprehensive Family Care, Cox Communications, Glenn Armentor Law Firm, LHC, SLCC and all of our individual supporters!
